Message from Dave

April 8th, 2020

The people of Chatham-Kent-Leamington are facing a crisis of historical proportion equal to or greater than any we have before.
No one has been left unaffected. Three weeks ago major concerns were wind direction on the lake, the Flyers and the Sharks, and how the spring fields were starting to look.
Now, we have shut down jobs, businesses, schools, churches, and new terms like “physical distancing” that have become part of our daily vocabulary in only a few weeks.
We must find a way to engage the new challenges of uncertainty, isolation, and varying degrees of fear of the unknown, and unseen. We will make it through to the other side of this, but we will not be the same.
I try to be a plain speaking, common sense representative. I accepted the duty to be accountable and transparent, yet I must also offer hope and confidence, not an easy balance these days. Given those constraints, the best I can responsibly say is that the coming weeks will be sacrifice, challenge and faith.
In addition to the many challenges of today’s urgencies, one of my new tasks is to start addressing the question: What is the role, and the opportunity, of the federal government socially and economically when we get to the other side of this crisis, and how do we start to prepare for it – regionally and nationally? How will we, as a community and a nation, provide for the new vulnerable, while coming to terms with the uncertain realities of a new economy with a historical level of debt?
There is no one to blame, we must make the best of it as we can. If you have questions, suggestions or want to help, people can email me at [email protected] My staff and I will do our best to help you through the frustration that can be government.
Our thanks to those who keep the essentials going, which we honour by staying home. Thank you to you all. Please help look after each other. We can do this. We must. We will. Together.
